My background as a scale model maker
I started my journey as a scale model maker about 15 years ago, drawing on my skills as a trained graphic designer to create models in 2D computer packages – then teaching myself how to translate scales from the real world.
I was inspired to start miniature model making thanks to my kids – or more specifically, their train set. I wanted to get involved and build out a landscape for their toy, teaching myself to create miniatures in 1:76 scale for model railways, and moving on to 1:50 scale model making as I started to do more detailed work.
Miniature model making techniques
As a self-taught model maker, I’ve picked up a lot of knowledge through studying other model making experts. Over the years I’ve refined these techniques and developed some of my own, in order to solve issues and find smart solutions to elevate my models. I’ve also recently extended my skills to the design and production of laser cut parts, which I sell to other miniature model makers.
I work with a range of materials for different aspects of my models, including:
- Foamed PVC (Foamex) – to make and carve stone walls
- MDF – for core structure
- Styrene strip – for details
- Paper and card
The scalpel and my engineer’s scribe are my most trusty tools – plus a good eye and a very steady hand!
I pride myself on making as many parts of my miniature models as I can, with around 85% of the finished piece being completely handmade, but with a few readymade items used for detailing – such as 3D printed chimney pots.
Becoming a custom model maker
I started taking commissions making scale models for railways in around 2017, and really enjoyed delivering them for my customers. My passion for the craft really took hold, so I started advertising my services as a bespoke miniature model maker to the wider world in 2020.
With plenty of experience under my belt, I can now take commissions for any architectural models – however detailed or complex. I love the challenge presented by any style of miniature model, but have a particular soft-spot for stone buildings and their character. They’re really fun to build!
Commissioning a scale model
I’m always happy to provide a quote for your own miniature scale model, and just need a clear set of photos of the property’s scope, or an address so I can take a look on Google Earth.
The time it takes to make a scale model varies, but as an example, a three bedroom cottage takes around 80 hours, with larger dioramas clocking in at 100-120 hours.
If you want to go ahead with your commission after receiving my quote, I require a 50% non-refundable deposit to book you in – and I’ll always aim to hand deliver the finished item wherever practical and possible.
If you think I’m the scale model maker for you and you’d like to get a quote for your own custom miniature model house or building, please drop me a line here.
